If someone lands on your website and can’t immediately figure out what you do, who you help, or what to do next, that’s not a design problem. It’s a strategy problem. And it’s one of the most common things I see when I start working with a new client.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be intentional. So let’s talk about the three things your website actually needs to be doing, and how to know if yours is falling short.

You have about three seconds before a visitor decides whether to stay or leave. Three seconds.
That means the first thing someone sees when they land on your site needs to answer two questions without them having to think about it:
Not buried in your about page. Not vaguely hinted at in a clever tagline. Right there, front and center, in plain language, your dream client can understand immediately.
A quick gut-check: pull up your homepage and look at it like you’ve never seen it before. Within five seconds, can you answer both of those questions? If you’re hesitating, that’s your sign.

Here’s the thing about websites: people don’t make decisions based on information alone. They make decisions based on how something makes them feel.
Your website can list every service you offer, every credential you have, every kind word a client ever said about you, and still not convert, because it never made anyone feel anything.
The websites that work are the ones that make a visitor think: “this is exactly what I’ve been looking for,” or “she totally gets me,” or even just “I feel good about this.”
That feeling comes from your words, your visuals, your flow, the story you’re telling. it comes from showing up with intention instead of just showing up with information.
Ask yourself: does my website feel like me? Does it reflect where my business actually is right now? Does it speak to the client I want to attract, not the one I had two years ago?

Even if someone loves what they see, if they don’t know what to do next, they’ll close the tab.
Every page on your website should have one clear call to action. not three. not a footer full of links and options. one clear, obvious, natural next step.
For most service-based businesses, that’s usually something like “let’s work together,” “book a call,” or “inquire here.” It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to be clear.
A confused visitor doesn’t convert. a guided visitor does.
If yours isn’t doing all three, that’s where we start.
I work with creative small business owners who are ready to stop guessing and start building something that actually works. Whether that looks like a full brand and website experience or a more streamlined refresh, the goal is always the same: a website that feels like you and works like it should.
